Actually, my name’s Anne, but I answer to Sarah these days so don’t sweat the small stuff! Sarah Vain and Tall is a bit of fun inspired by a great book called Sarah, Plain and Tall. The pun started in a conversation about ‘tall clichés’: tall women are said to be ‘model types’ and ‘stuck up’, but also somehow ‘plain’ and unfeminine.
What rot. You can’t have both, and neither is true of every girl ever born with a tall gene. I think the ‘plain’ thing started because historically, tall women have had very little choice in fashion. Maybe it was hard to find a guy who was OK with height once upon a time — but that’s what the internet is for. The truth is, most women spend their lives trying to look taller and get some of the attention we get just for being, well, us.
I spent half my life apologising for my height: stooping, wearing flats, believing shop assistants who said that there was nothing out there for me. I’m dedicating the rest of it to showing other tall girls there is a better way.
Taller is better, so stand up straight and show some leg!
