Category: Size 11+ Shoes: from Oz or with Global Shipping

Oh, the shame.  Dear blog, dear readers, I have neglected you badly.  I’m sorry: I hurt my back, you see*, and got a wonderful new job doing exactly what I want to do, and have to move house.  And the latter two are not easy when your back screams in pain every time you flex.  So the blog had to rest for a while…

Here is an awesome tutorial that came my way while I was busy not-blogging.  I have a lot more and I’m looking forward to sharing them.

Black shoes waiting to be covered in fabric

Sick of your stupid boring sensible and available in the right size black shoes?  Cover them in fabric!

Fabric Covered Shoes

Fabulous!

Thank you all for your patience… I may be blogging shorter posts for a while but I’ll certainly be here.

*I hurt it when my husband dropped me on the couch at an odd angle.  Seriously — I married the guy because he could pick me up.  I forgot about the coming down part!!

Eve in Audrey Dress

Well, we’re back in Melbourne and boy, were we tired tall girls last night.  Amazon Eve is on a blistering schedule and yesterday was no exception.  First stop was K-Rock FM where Eve talked about her life at 6’8″.  She pattered through two interviews in fifteen minutes but when we arrived ten minutes late (!) at shoe store No Small Feet, there was already an impatient crowd of folks waiting to meet the “World’s Tallest Model.”  Here are some of the cutest:

Eve with a young fan

And they were impressed!  Even more so when they got to experience life on the tall side.  I’m fairly sure this little girl has never walked around at eight feet tall before.

A few (um, many) more photo opportunities later, we stole Eve away and started to have fun dressing her up.  Sally McKinnon is a 6’0″ tall stylist from Melbourne and such a sweet and lovely gal.  She took my dresses, some gorgeous heels from No Small Feet, and this incredible, once in a lifetime model — and made some very special magic.  How I love dressing up!  Luckily, Eve does too…

Does it fit?  Yes, I think so…

It was a huge and crazy day, topped off by waking up to a photo of Eve wearing Kenya in the Geelong Advertiser (do click through to the photo gallery. I personally love the shots there more than the one they ran with, but there you go, turns out I don’t run the world).  There will be a longer piece on Saturday and I’ll post a link to that too!

Amazon Eve gets her motor runnin'...

Thanks MUST go to Sarah De Grandi from No Small Feet, who made the whole even possible.  Basketball games on weekends meant 6’3″ Sarah had no time to travel to Melbourne large-shoe specialists, so she’s done something really smart for a small regional area, setting up a mini-store within a tall-friendly sporting goods shop.  Now it’s a one stop shop for basketballers, rowers, netballers, volleyballers and everyone else too!  Thanks also to David Smith of SunSetDigital who took a number of photos on the day.  Here’s one he took of all of us — doesn’t Sarah rock the little black Audrey dress?

Four Tall Girls in Sarah Vain and Tall

Sadly, now it’s goodbye to a lovely lady!

Eve is off next to Brisbane and I’ll post some links to her other media appearances.  I was overwhelmed by her grace.  Tall girls, you know how I go on and on about being nice, not rude to those who stare and make ill-thought-out comments?  Being 6’8″ means there is absolutely no respite from the attention, and Eve has learned infinite kindness and patience.  We were all sitting together in a cafe after the event, when I noticed a couple staring at us.  I stared back.  They kept staring.  Seriously, these two were not going to stop looking and I was getting a bit angry on Eve’s behalf when she turned around and said sweetly, “6’8″, 6’1″, 6’0″ and 6’3″.  She got a laugh, and then turned back to us and kept on talking.

Ladies, that is class!

Mira Smoljko at Glamazon Shoes

Fantastic news for Melbournites — we now have a large-size shoe store that’s all about fashion.

I’m not sure how I missed the opening of Glamazon Shoes in Ascot Vale, but the universe was determined that we would meet.  In the space of one week, I received three emails about Glamazon, one from the owner herself!  Mira is a size 11 shoe addict who loves fashionable shoes — what a win for those of us who grew up thinking sensible shoes were a curse, not an option.

I have to say I am very taken with the “Jagger”, which is veeery like the shoe I picked out for the Audrey dress.  What a killer combination!

Mira shops in the US, where larger sizes are easier to come by, and also stocks Kumfs’ new, younger-looking line Ziera.  She stocks size 8 to a 13 and is more than happy to send shoes by mail to those who don’t live locally.

I love shopping online, but it’s nice once in a while to be able to try shoes on.  Please visit Mira and make her shop very welcome in Melbourne!

Some of you very intelligent tall folks may have noticed there have been a few hiccups in the world of Sarah Vain and Tall.  That train wreck of a t-shirt : I have been trying to fix it for a month and a half now.  My cut and sew shop of choice, from whom I was also buying pattern work, decided that since I was a relatively small buyer, I could be fobbed off with something less than quality.  We have been back and forth on the issue (at considerable expense, I might add), for all this time, with no result.  Unfortunately, in fashion manufacturing, c’est la vie. You have to cut your losses and look for someone else.  (Then, when you find that someone else, hug them and squeeze them and promise never to leave!)

Stressing me most is that, having promised you guys the line to die for, it’s taking so much longer than I thought it would, to get it made and packed and ready for you.

The past few weeks, I have been in meeting after meeting.  In fact I have two more after I post this: one with a new fabric agent, and one with a stunning new pattern maker, with whom I may be a little bit in love.  Her best friend is 6’2″: she gets it.  And, wonder of wonders, she knows people of quality and has introduced me to a new cut and sew shop.

So we’ll have to wait a little bit longer.  I’m sorry.  I couldn’t be more disappointed, but I will not put my name on, nor take anybody’s money for, a substandard garment.

I hope you all understand!

In the mean time I will still be posting about things I find.  The latest has me pretty excited.

Lane 172 is a Korean brand making flats in a rainbow of colours.  They’re seriously cheap at around AU$30 each, plus $10 postage from YesStyle.com.au.

They say they fit to a European 45, but I just received a blue patent flat and a grey flower accent flat in the 45, which fit my size 42 (AU11) feet pretty well.   There’s a fitting guide, and I would go a size up from the recommended fit.  Don’t worry about what seems like excessive width in the fitting guide: it’s a figment of their imagination.

From $30 to $400, vive la difference

Yesterday I picked up a very special parcel.  My first ever, entirely custom made pair of shoes.  Mallouk Shoes in Sydney Road, Brunswick made these for me.  The shot below is of their very unprepossessing store front — hardly a sign to be seen — nestled in between a jeweller and an invitations store.

The exciting part: these shoes are 100% custom made.  You pick any heel height, any shade of leather, any clip or decorative fabric, and they will put it together for you.  They don’t bat an eyelid at unusual sizes or widths — in fact they were even a little insulted, I think, when I asked if they could make me an 11 and my Mum a wide 11 with room for her high arches — and they allowed me to supply scraps from my dress to use as the silk wrap, even matching it to a superbly soft, blush coloured leather.  I’m so in love.  They even organised a shoe fitting!  Oh, the luxury of it all…

So in case you didn’t guess (!!) these are for my wedding.  It’s coming up in six weeks — eek!  I don’t know if I could justify $400 for a single pair of shoes just any old time, but as a treat for a special day … they are so wonderful.  The verdict — I’m saving up for the next pair already.

Red high heel shoes

Twas two days before Christmas, and all through Melbourne, the word was spreading… red high heeled party shoes in size 11!!

Target has been stocking size 11s in the more boring styles for a while (of course you have to be quick, blah blah blah) but I surfed through on a pre-Christmas shopping mission and found these.

Red high heel shoes

For $30.  You could have knocked me down with that proverbial feather.  I have not bought a pair of shoes for $30 since I was in primary school.  When I got back to the office I ran around showing them off and wore them all day, I was so excited!  (Yes, I am that much of a dork).

A very Merry Christmas to you, my newly favourite giant international corporation.  May your new policy bring you joy and wads of cash.

In other news, check out this great post at Offbeat Bride, on how to get the most our of a fitting when you’re having garments made or altered.  It applies to fittings of any kind, not just bridal, and is well worth a read.

Am I behind the times?  Have you all discovered Amazon Global, a service which lets you filter out all of the stuff Amazon won’t ship outside America?

Bonus!  Used with their size filter, it’s online shopping minus the disappointment.  I’m loving these in a size 11:

Poetic Licence Women's Risky Business Pump

John Fluevog Women's Fiorenza Mary Jane Pump

Dr. Scholl's Women's Diefy Open Toe Wedge

Yeah, that last one’s a little loud :) but it’s not black, so it’s got automatic points.

Of course shipping will cost as much as the shoes.  But it just does.

In other news, I have a graphic designer on board with me now.  So in a few days this site will be less fugly than it is now — which is considerably fugly.

First of all, a little shoe porn.  These inspired today’s post and, quite frankly, are the prettiest shoes I have ever owned.  Excuse my poor photographs.  Glitter is hard to shoot and if these ever made it to the Nine West site, they’re long gone now!

shoes 003

We’re going to be very happy together, as well as 4″ taller than my (6’1″ tall) fiance.

shoes 004

They’re from Nine West, and they’re called ‘Liatris (Pink)’.  But you won’t find another pair in Melbourne over a 9.  I saw them — probably the day they were out — and called around Melbourne until I found a Nine West store with a pair.  Another tall girl was trying them on so I couldn’t reserve them.  The heart break!  But five minutes later all was fine — she took the 10 1/2.  If you are she and reading this post: bless you and your tiny little feet.

So here’s the subject of the post.  Shopping for size 11′s in Australia is a blood sport.  Not as bad as it was when I was a baby-tall (thank you, Dr. Marten), but as it stands in this city, there are only 3 ways I know of to get nice shoes:

a) Try and plan what you’ll need a season in advance.  First, get a Bongo US account — have your bank details ratified and send them two forms of ID.  That means you have a US ‘address’ for those prehistoric US stores that won’t ship internationally, or charge stupid amounts for it.  Then call Zappos to order because their purchasing system has a little tanty when you try to pay with an AU credit card.  Painfully wade through spelling everything a-for-apple, b-for-badger, becuase their staff are not good with accents.  This whole process will take a few weeks.    Pray the shoes will fit.

I do this but it makes me almost as frustrated as glittery heels make me happy.  OR:

b) Go around all the stores that occasionally stock the odd 11.  Put yourself on every mailing list they have.  The moment you get that email saying there is new stock; run, don’t walk.

Here’s another option.

c) Go and make friends with Simon, the manager of the Nine West store in Collins St (opposite Tiffany’s).  Simon is determined to make a name for himself and his store as ‘the place to be’ for difficult sizes.  Moreover, many of the US made 11s would fit an 11.5 and a select few would accommodate a 12.  I went in on Tuesday evening for this magical, mythical shoe in a promised 11.  Could it be… would it be my lucky day?  And it was!  Not only was the shoe there, and roomy, but Simon and his staff knew exactly what I wanted before I even opened my mouth.  They grabbed every pretty, colourful, high heeled 11 they had.  And they had lots!  I played in there until closing time and came away with these, too:

m_heels_chopin_purple_lg

(As of the date of this post, there are 11s of the ‘Chopin’ left in Collins Street and here).  They’re very comfy indeed for a heel, and would go swimmingly with a little 50s inspired outfit.

Ladies, support Simon and anyone else you know who will stock pretty 11s.  The more large sizes he knows he can sell, the more he can stock.  I know for a fact that Nine West sell 12s in the US, so it’s also worth campaigning for those.  In that shop I felt like a perfectly normal girl.  I may have got a little teary.  Must be that I got glitter in my eyes.

Do you have any shoe-getting tactics you’d care to share, or know any other retailers who stock fashion shoes in large sizes?  Leave a comment so others can support them!
